As an avid outdoors enthusiast and hillwalker I was really looking forward to my visit to Kerry and exploring the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. I was delighted to find out that one of my favourite walking guide authors, Adrian Hendroff, recently had penned several guide books covering stunning Kerry and West Cork.As with all of Hendroff’s guide books, the richness of detail and the colourful descriptions and images, makes it into a wonderful read where you can dream, visualise and plan your upcoming adventure. After carefully studying the book, I decided to go for the Coomloughra Horseshoe. “Climb the three highest peaks in Ireland via airy ridges in this classic mountain horseshoe route” as summarised by the author. Due to the airy ridges and especially the notorious Beenkeragh Ridge, the hike is graded as 5 on a scale from 1-5. Hendroff strongly advises to avoid the ridges in strong winds or gales.Armed with maps and the guide book, I easily found the large car park at the base of the Hydro Road. The weather forecast was unpredictable with a variety of sunny spells, rain and mist. Thankfully the wind had calmed down. The first part of the hike is fairly straight forward, though quite steep and rocky. The guide book constantly assure that you are on the right track with its superb attention to detail including regular grid references. As I approached the summit of Beenkeragh the mist thickened and it was no sight of the ridge ahead. Having memorised the authors detailed description of how to conquer and stay safe on the ridge, I felt confident enough to give it a go …Suddenly, as by a miracle the mist lifted and I could admire the notorious ridge in all its glory. The heart made a jump when I realised how narrow it was and without the guide book, I would probably have turned around! The real secret of the guide book is that it explains in detail how to approach the most challenging parts of the ridge. If you are not a rock climber or a very experienced scrambler, you feel much safer skirting around or slightly below the ridge on a couple of occasions. Especially “The Bone” towards the end is a very lofty spot and needs careful navigation. The rest of the hike - including the summits Carrauntoohil and Caher is very rewarding - but not as challenging as the Beenkeragh Ridge. The guide book provides all the information you will need to navigate safely and securely over the three highest summits in Ireland as long as you have the required mountain skills, maps, compass and weather on your side.Enjoy hiking!PS.
